Stuart Swalwell MSc
Improvement Coach and Advisor

Photo of Stuart SwalwellStuart worked in various improvement roles in Rolls-Royce plc for 15 years before joining PRISM Europe.

The approach he brings to coaching is rooted in the thinking of Dr W Edwards Deming – that improvement in the quality of products and services leads to a decrease in costs (less re-work, less scrap, less duplication, less complexity) and results in increased customer satisfaction; this in turn leads to greater market share and job security.

Stuart works with teams to produce the improvements in products and services. He recognises that individual heroes (e.g specially trained Black Belts) can make contributions but sustainment of any improvement effort will only come from the involvement of people working in the process.

Furthermore, he is keen to get the engagement of the leadership! He has seen how difficult it is to get real improvement if the leadership team is not on board.

He helps the leadership to view their work through the lens of Dr Deming’s System of Management focusing on 4 areas:

  • systems – optimising the end to end process
  • variation – data about variation to make better management decisions
  • human psychology – why people behave as they do
  • learning and developing – using a systematic approach to improvement

His style of training is to use simulations and activities to draw out key learning points that make the training fun as well as stimulating!

He has delivered improvement programmes in the UK, Germany, America, Poland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Singapore.

Key Skills:

  • Delivering training programmes that merge the techniques of Lean and Process Improvement
  • Working with leadership teams to help them move from an ethos of problem solving (fire-fighting) to one of customer-focussed continual improvement
  • Coaching teams through the systematic stages of an improvement activity
